June has arrived – the first month of summer. Yes, I know that summer doesn’t officially arrive until the 20th, but with all that has been going on in our world, it is good to know that seasons are changing as they always do. When I sat down to write this morning, I had a story to tell. However, current events kept flooding my mind. They reminded me that we live in a broken culture, in a society that often…..
I recently faced one of those jobs that needed to be done, but I didn’t want to tackle. I finally decided to expend the effort necessary to make it happen. The refrigerator in my laundry room had to be completely defrosted, as there was an ice build-up in the freezer section. As I moved items from the refrigerator to my big freezer, I ran across something I thought was long gone – a red icing rose I had saved from…..
During my childhood, Easter was often referred to as “Resurrection Sunday.” Those of us who are Christians understand the reference, but in today’s society, many people do not. Jesus, the Son of God, came into our world as a baby. He was born to a mother who was a virgin; His Father was God Himself. Jesus began His ministry to others around the age of thirty. The Bible records His story in four different Gospels, located in the New Testament;…..
Have you ever known the meaning of a word when you hear it, but not recognized it in its written form? One that confused me for a lot of years was“compromise.” I read it as “compromise.” I knew what a compromise was,but didn’t associate it with the printed word. Or how about “chaos?” That’s another one that can really be confusing. I have heard it pronounced several different ways when people are reading aloud, “chows” and “chy-oes” being among them. Who would…..
As of this week, it is official – I have lived in Indiana twice as long as I lived in Tennessee, the state in which I was born and raised. Maybe I should consider myself an adopted Hoosier; however, I know I will always be a Volunteer in my heart. Although Indiana and Tennessee are part of the same country, there were things I had to learn once I married a Hoosier native and was stuck here. People are a…..
One of the blessings of summer is fresh berries; blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries are some of my favorites (in that order). I have read quite a bit lately about the health benefits of these berries, and there is not one of them that I don’t enjoy eating by the handful. Of the three, blackberries are probably my favorite because I have so many memories of picking them. All the effort was rewarded with one bite of my mother’s blackberry pie. …..
The month of May is almost over; however, I would say that its status as National Strawberry Month can bleed over into June. That is only my opinion, but those who enjoy strawberries would agree wholeheartedly. I was searching for recipes on a completely different topic when I found several recipes that are worth including in my column once again. Strawberry Crunch Cake is one I had marked in a cookbook to try, but before I could manage to do…..
