Now it’s July. Half of 2020 is history; it was definitely historic! Things that seemed so routine when we entered this year are no longer the same. Every trip to the store reminds me that things have changed. It may be in the availability (or lack thereof) of certain items. It could be sticker shock from escalating prices. I do know that I miss seeing smiling faces that are unhidden by masks. One thing I am extremely grateful for is…..
During all the recent weeks of isolation, uncertainty, and unrest, there have been times I felt extremely unsettled. I have found only one thing that is sure – the love of my Heavenly Father. Knowing that I am never out of His care has helped me look at these tempestuous times with an assurance I could never come up with on my own. One of the ways God has provided for me is by supplying a weekly focus, often just…..
When I spend time reminiscing about former times, I recall long-time friends, former pets, and favorite places. For some reason, this morning I started thinking about old cars. If they could talk, each of them would have lots of stories to tell. The first vehicle I remember was a light green Chevrolet my parents dubbed “Old Huldy.” It may have been a 1949 model, I am not totally sure, but it came from somewhere around that year. The back of…..
It’s September, which means football season is underway. For some people, it is an exciting time as they root for their favorite teams, whether it be high school, college, or professional. If I had to pick a favorite sport, I guess I would say it is football, although I have forgotten more than I remember about the game. My reason for choosing football is because it was “the” game in my home state of Tennessee and I grew up listening…..
It’s hard to believe that August is almost over. As its last days swing past, it comes to mind that summer is quickly sliding away. Labor Day is often considered its “last hurrah;” that holiday is this coming weekend. To be truthful, I am not sad to see summer depart. For some reason, my allergies have been horrible this year. I think much of it has to do with the fact that I am surrounded by corn. Some of the…..
I almost forgot about Father’s Day this year. Maybe it’s not too surprising; my dad, my father-in-law, and my husband are no longer living and so the significance of the day doesn’t stand out like it did formerly. But since I remembered, I have some thoughts on the subject. First of all, I think about my grandfathers. I never knew either of them, as they passed away before I was born. However, their lives had an impact on mine because…..
Summer is winding rapidly to a close. Nights are becoming cooler, and it is getting dark much earlier. However, summer still has one last hurrah – Labor Day. I was having trouble deciding on which recipe(s) to delete out of the ones I selected but decided to cut the story short and use them all. Have a safe and enjoyable end-of-summer holiday! Toasted Pecan-Broccoli-and-Cauliflower Salad 2/3 cup chopped pecans 1-1/2 cups light mayonnaise OR salad dressing 1/2 cup sugar…..
Summer may not have started officially, but hotter days have already made their appearance. When the temperatures creep above 85 degrees, who wants to turn on the oven? Cooking on the grill is an excellent way to keep the heat outside where it belongs. As I was preparing to write this week’s column I read through my Father’s Day articles from the past ten years. All but two of them include recipes for grilling. Father’s Day and outdoor cooking seem…..
For me, this year’s Memorial Day takes on a new meaning. Besides remembering those who gave their lives for our country, I will be thinking of my wedding day forty-one years ago. Bob and I meant every word we vowed when we uttered the words, “Till death do us part.” Marriage was a lifetime commitment, not something to discard when the going got tough. We made a choice to stay together through the difficulties of life and the struggles in…..
