May is National Egg Month. It is really not hard to find recipes that include eggs; they are used in a lot of ways. They may be found in cakes, cookies, breads, casseroles, salads, pies, plus many other dishes. They are eaten boiled, baked, fried, scrambled, shirred, poached, deviled; I am sure there are other cooking methods I haven’t mentioned. For many years, eggs had a bad reputation. It was thought that they were a significant cause of high cholesterol. …..
What a month March has been. I don’t think any of us would want to repeat it! Life has changed for all of us, and in light of the current situation, I am going to provide recipes that may help with meals during this time. During a conversation with my daughter-in-law, Heather, she informed me that many of her friends were looking for recipes to help use what foods they have on hand. She recalled the “Create Your Own Casserole”…..
Even though my last column was published the day after Christmas, I wrote it before the holiday. Now that our celebration is over, I can relate details of how I spent my time with family. There was a splendid sunrise on Christmas morning. If it had not been for my busy schedule, I would have been outside snapping pictures. (I did take a couple of photos of the gorgeous sunset on Christmas Eve.) I drove to my son Jonathan’s house…..
Have you ever known the meaning of a word when you hear it, but not recognized it in its written form? One that confused me for a lot of years was“compromise.” I read it as “compromise.” I knew what a compromise was,but didn’t associate it with the printed word. Or how about “chaos?” That’s another one that can really be confusing. I have heard it pronounced several different ways when people are reading aloud, “chows” and “chy-oes” being among them. Who would…..
On the eve of Thanksgiving Day, many refrigerators are bulging with items-in-waiting. Pies are either baking in the oven or set out for cooling. A turkey might be thawing in the fridge, or if someone is like me and forgot to take it out of the freezer soon enough, it might be in a basin of cold water (which is changed frequently) to hurry the procedure. Kitchens are busy places on the day before this holiday. Now let’s fast-forward a…..
It happened again. My grief game of Chutes and Ladders found me in a decent position. Lately, I had managed to avoid several chutes, even climbing a few ladders. Oh, I landed on some small slides now and again, but I soon worked my way past them. Then, unexpectedly, I arrived at the big one; the chute that drops almost all the way down to the bottom. May has been difficult for me the past few years as it holds…..
There is a saying that goes like this: “Be careful what you pray for,” meaning that your request may be granted in an unexpected (and possibly undesired) way. Recently I had been looking at all the boxes of books and other stuff in my basement and praying for the “oomph” to go through them. However, other more important tasks took possession of my time. Then my basement flooded during the deluge of a couple of weeks ago. After the water was dealt with and…..
I am continually fascinated by the things my Heavenly Father uses to gain my attention, causing me to focus on Him. Now that the daylight hours are getting shorter, I greet each new morning while it is still dark outside. That means I can enjoy the sunrise on days I pay attention to what is happening in the sky. Sometimes it appears with little fanfare; other days yield a glorious display of color. Then there are days I refer to…..
